Second Annual Awards Weekend

Registration & Payment for Banquet & Dive Trip
Extended to September 15th!!


Please join CSTR at its 2nd Annual Awards Weekend September 18-19 starting at 7pm (no host bar).  The event will be held in Newbury Park/ Ventura.  The awards banquet (shrimp & tri tips) will be held on board the M/V Explorer in Ventura Harbor, catered by Spinnaker's Seafood Broiler.  Divers will remain on board to go out overnight for a 2- or 3-tank dive in the Channel Islands the next day.

This year CSTR is proud to honor an impressive group of people for their long record of extraordinary accomplishments to benefit our organization's mission.  Jeremy Bonnet will receive the 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award.  Assemblywoman Diane Harkey receives the Reef Builder Award, which is given to a non-member or volunteer.  There are three recipients of the 2010 Flagship Award, which honors non-Californians who are non-members or volunteers.  They are Jon Dodrill, Bill Horn and Keith Mille of Florida's Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  CSTR is also proud to announce that Jay Straith is the 2010 inductee into the California Ships to Reefs Hall of Fame.

Hotel accommodations for non-divers were blocked at La Quinta Inn & Suites in Newbury Park (1-805-499-5910), $69/nite + tax (king) or $79/nite + tax (2 queens).  As of September 4th, we can no longer guarantee room availability or price.

Pricing for the weekend is as follows:

Member Divers:  $120 includes dive trip & banquet (only 24 spaces).  Divers must bring all their own equipment including tanks.  Air is available on board, but those using Nitrox must bring it with them.  Non-Member Divers:  $135.

Non-Divers:  $35 includes banquet only (only 26 non-diver spaces).  Non-Member non-divers:  $40.

August 2010 Chairman's Letter

Although CSTR is heading into preparations for our 2nd Annual Awards Banquet on September 18th, this month's letter is all about last month.  July was a month that saw the successes of AB 634 and all the Yukon's 10th Anniversary events.  You can read the details in our newsletter, but here I want to name and thank the people that made them happen.  An * means the person participated in more than just the event where they are listed.

Why We Need a National Reefing Program

One of the things we learned in New Jersey was that, in fact, the Feds (Navy and MARAD), don't really want to have ships reefed. It is easier for them to pay a private contractor to haul the ships away and dismantle them, even though it costs as much or more to do it that way than to reef them. Read more here.
